Over eighty technologists with an interest in oil and gas measurement in the upstream area gathered on February 24th and 25th 2016 in Houston at the Upstream Production Measurement (UPM) Forum to hear and discuss the latest in application of measurement techniques to their problems.
Representing a cross-section of operators, vendors, regulators, consultants, academics, and others, the meeting was highlighted by five tutorial lectures, eleven topical paper/presentations, and numerous other talks and open discussions. The keynote address, “The Role of Production Measurement in Upstream Asset Management,” was given by Mr. Frank Bergren, Shell’s Principal Technical Expert in Well, Reservoir and Facility Management.
Product exhibits by sponsors of the Forum were located adjacent to the presentation area, and stimulated discussion during session breaks, as well as during the networking receptions at the end of each day. Forum sponsors included Agar, ConocoPhillips, Endress+Hauser, FMC, Letton Hall Group, M-Flow, Solartron ISA, and Weatherford.
Organized as a non-profit, self-sustaining venture, the UPM Forum has received high praise from participants as an economical way for upstream technical staff to advance their proficiency during times when budgets are tight. Eric Toskey, CEO of the Letton Hall Group, who administer the event, said “The UPM Forum is a low-cost learning opportunity that draws all stakeholders together to share knowledge and hold open discussion on our most pressing needs for better data -- information needed to manage upstream operations.” Regarding the 2016 forum, he added, “Everyone who attended this year learned something of value they can apply to their work. In a downturn, that is the most cost effective way an organization can improve.” The next UPM Forum is planned to be in Houston in February 2017.
